The best way to move around by land is renting a car. The Riviera Maya covers 100 miles, but a visit to the neighbor state of Yucatán is worthwhile.
To rent a car you need to be 21 years old, hold a valid drivers license and a major credit card, (Visa, MasterCard or American Express).
Preferably reserve ahead. Car rentals have insurance for purchase at the time of rental.
